The email usually lands on a weekday morning: your account is "at risk" because one metric slipped below Walmart's standard. For a lot of arbitrage sellers it is the first time they look at the Performance dashboard at all. Walmart is stricter than its reputation, it measures you on delivery instead of shipment, and it tightened the rules again in April 2026. This guide covers what is measured, why RA and OA sellers trip these metrics more often than brands do, and the habits that keep an account out of trouble going into Q4.
The metrics Walmart measures
Walmart's Seller Performance Standards page lists the core metrics and their thresholds, evaluated over rolling windows (mostly 30 or 60 days depending on the metric). The ones that cause the most trouble:
| Metric | Standard | What counts against you |
|---|---|---|
| On-Time Delivery Rate | 90% or higher | Orders delivered after the Expected Delivery Date shown to the customer |
| Valid Tracking Rate | 99% or higher | Orders without a valid, carrier-scannable tracking number |
| Cancellation Rate | 2% or lower | Orders you cancel after Walmart sends them to you, including auto-cancels for missing the ship date |
In April 2026 Walmart retired Refund Rate and started enforcing newer metrics, including Item Not Received Rate, Return Rate, a Negative Feedback Rate and a Seller Response Rate for customer messages. Third-party guides disagree on some of those thresholds, so read the exact numbers on the Performance dashboard in Seller Center. That page is the one Walmart enforces.
A detail Amazon sellers miss: on-time is judged at the customer's door. You can hand the box to the carrier on time and still fail if the service you picked is slower than the delivery promise on the listing.
What happens when you miss a standard
Walmart's process is gradual, which helps if you catch it early. When an account falls below a standard, you get an email naming the metric. If it keeps sliding, Walmart can ask for an action plan, suppress listings or the whole account, and in the worst case suspend or terminate it.
Two practical points:
- The windows are rolling. A bad week in early November keeps dragging your rate down until those orders age out, which can take a month or two.
- Suspensions also hold money. If you are already waiting on settlements, read the payout schedule guide to see how a hold stacks on top of the normal cycle.
Why arbitrage sellers trip these metrics
Brands ship from one warehouse with stable stock. RA and OA sellers have a messier setup, and each part of it maps to a metric:
- Phantom stock. You list 6 units, 2 turn out damaged, and the extra orders get cancelled. Two cancels on a 60-order month already puts you at 3.3%.
- Prep center lag. An OA order that has to come back from a prep center, or one that waits for a retailer's delivery before you can ship, misses the ship date and gets auto-cancelled.
- Slow services. Cheap ground labels on a listing promising 3-day delivery are the most common cause of low On-Time Delivery.
- Tracking typos. A manual upload with a wrong digit or the wrong carrier selected fails Valid Tracking, even if the parcel arrives.
A worked example
Say you shipped 120 FBM orders over the last 30 days. Here is how small problems add up:
- 4 orders cancelled (two damaged units, two out of stock): 4 / 120 = 3.3%, over the 2% limit.
- 15 orders arrived after the Expected Delivery Date because you used the cheapest ground service everywhere: 105 / 120 = 87.5% on-time, under 90%.
- 2 tracking numbers uploaded with the wrong carrier: 118 / 120 = 98.3% valid tracking, under 99%.
Not one of those mistakes looks serious on its own, yet three metrics are now failing. Small accounts have even less room: at 30 orders a month, a single cancellation is 3.3%.
A routine that keeps the dashboard green
- Check the Performance dashboard twice a week, and daily from mid-November through December.
- List only units you physically have, or keep a buffer of one unit on fast movers. Overselling is the top cause of cancellations.
- Set handling time to what you can actually hit on your worst day, not your best one.
- Compare the delivery promise on your listings with real carrier transit times for far zones. Upgrade the service where it falls short, and price that into your margin.
- Buy labels through Seller Center or an integrated shipping tool so tracking uploads automatically.
- Answer customer messages the same day. Response rate is now measured.
- Move steady sellers to WFS. Walmart handles delivery and tracking on WFS orders, which takes those metrics off your plate for that inventory. The WFS vs FBM comparison walks through when the fees are worth it.
Many cancellations start at the buy: you stocked a product whose real sales and competition you didn't know, then shipped it in a rush. WallScout shows estimated monthly sales, seller competition and a real-fee profit calculator with an FBM/WFS toggle right on the Walmart product page, so you can price in a faster shipping service or WFS before you buy. If you already received a warning
Act on it the same day. Find the orders that hurt the metric, fix the cause, and write down what changed. If Walmart asks for an action plan, make it specific to your account: the root cause, what you already fixed, and what process prevents it next time. Reviewers see copy-paste templates all day and can spot one quickly.
Performance problems are separate from policy problems. A suspension for IP complaints or restricted brands needs a different response, covered in the guide to Walmart IP complaints and brand restrictions. And keep in mind that strong metrics also feed into whether you win the Walmart Buy Box, so this work pays you back in sales as well.
Frequently asked questions
What are Walmart's seller performance standards in 2026? The core standards are On-Time Delivery Rate of 90% or higher, Valid Tracking Rate of 99% or higher and Cancellation Rate of 2% or lower, measured over rolling windows. Since April 2026 Walmart also enforces newer metrics such as Item Not Received Rate, Return Rate, Negative Feedback Rate and Seller Response Rate. Check the Performance dashboard in Seller Center for the exact thresholds that apply to your account.
Can Walmart suspend my account for late deliveries? Yes. If On-Time Delivery stays below the standard after warnings, Walmart can suppress your listings, ask for an action plan, or suspend the account. On-time is measured against the delivery date promised to the customer, so a slow shipping service can fail you even when you ship on time.
Do WFS orders count toward my performance metrics? Walmart ships WFS orders and handles their tracking, so delivery on that inventory is no longer in your hands. Moving fast sellers to WFS protects your delivery metrics, as long as the fees still leave you a margin.
How long does a bad metric take to recover? The metrics use rolling windows, so bad orders only stop counting when they age out, typically after 30 or 60 days depending on the metric. The faster you fix the cause, the sooner new on-time orders start pulling the rate back up.
